Point of Departure exhibit at the LCVA

The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA)—well-known to community members, children and art teachers throughout its home region—was named the Best Art Gallery in Central Virginia by Virginia Living magazine’s “Best of Virginia 2025” issue published in early May.

The honor was determined by popular vote in the magazine’s annual reader survey.

All of us—staff, volunteers and advisory board—are thrilled to have the incredibly inspiring work LCVA does recognized by Virginia Living.

A part of Longwood University and located in Farmville, LCVA has been a center of culture, education and enlightenment since its founding in 1978. Far from a stuffy, whisper-quiet space, the LCVA is just as likely to mount exhibitions of serious, thought-provoking paintings or folk art as it is to feature whimsical illustrations from the Bad Kitty series of children’s books or artwork created by schoolchildren from the region.

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the museum is intent on being a welcoming space for everyone, and opens its doors wide for family workshops aimed at children, Art After Dark talks for adults and professional development events for art teachers. It also serves as a resource and source of inspiration for students at Longwood.

All of LCVA’s exhibitions and almost all of its other events are free and open to the public.

Our vibrancy is a direct reflection of our community, which is at the heart of our museum. I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish together and excited to see what the future holds for LCVA.
